 Saturday 28th November 2009  Grimsby SFA U15    2   v   1   Leed SFA U15

Leeds miserable run of form continued with another defeat, although in another game that they perhaps should have won.

After a long journey to the far east ( of England anyway ) and with the majority of the game played in cold, persistent rain, Leeds were left to reflect on not taking a number of clear cut chances to overturn a two goal defecit they faced at half time.

Leeds started the brighter of the two teams, and with Michael Brinn and Max Pritchett-Collins giving them pace on each flank, they looked the more likely to score, as well as overall, looking the better team.

The first chance came within the first five minutes following a corner, but in the scramble that followed, the keeper was able to grab the ball, quite literally on the goal line.

As the half progressed, Grimsby came back into the game and took the lead after 30 minutes.
Slack play in the Leeds defence saw the ball given away, and from the first time cross into the box, the ball was sidefooted home  from six yards. 0-1.

Leeds almost equalised five minutes later when a fine shot from outside the box from Matty Ellis was swatted away by the keeper with the Leeds forwards unable to force home the rebound.
Instead, it was Grimby who doubled their lead as they were quicker to anticipate and quicker to react than the static Leeds defence, and scored easily following a pass and move attack on the edge of the box.

0-2 at half time, and rough justice for Leeds.

The second half was much more positive with some personnel and positional changes reinvigorating the team.

Half chances came and went, but it took until 15 minutes to go before a goal came. A deep cross from Cameron Iverson was headed goalward by Mark Simpson and Liam Whiteman was on hand to smash home the rebound as the keeper pushed away the header.

The siege on the Grimsby goal then commenced ( and for older readers resembled the 1973 England v Poland world cup qualifier )

A corner resulted in a shot from Cameron and a point blank save from the keeper.

Michael Brinn's run on goal was blocked by a diving save from the keeper with Mark Simpson's floated lob towards the empty net agonisingly just clearing the bar.

in the last minute Michael had a clear shot on goal from just inside the box which was saved by the legs of the keeper as he dived the wrong way.

In was not destined to be ( again ) and the boys tropped off feeling frustrated at a game they should not have lost.

Plenty of shooting practice required at next week's training methinks ! "
