U12 Match reports latest report first

Sat 26 April 08  Leeds 2  Barnsley 1

Barnsley were clearly up for this one and came close to scoring in the first few minutes when their centre forward headed over the bar from a corner. The Leeds defence were kept busy throughout the first half and the combination of Connor Gilboy, Sam Chippendale, Josh Robson, Joe Boylan and Dan Clayton in goal, all made significant contributions to keep a clean sheet.

In the middle the competitive pairing of Spen Lund and Will Boyle had a real battle against a big and strong Barnsley midfield. But they rose to the challenge and were the instigators of most of the Leeds attacks.  On the left wing Luke Porritt had an excellent first half, making several driving runs followed by quality crosses. On the right wing it was clear Jamie Lloyd was carrying an injury but despite this he created several opportunities for front men Macaulay Milburn and Reece Fennel, but there were few clear cut chances. Half time 0-0

The second half saw the introduction of Ben Scargill, Odun Obebe and Ben Joyce.

Barnsley were the first to liven things up when a corner fell lose in the Leeds box. They looked certain to score but had three close range shots miraculously saved by Dan Clayton and eventually tidied up by Josh Robson.

Soon after Sam Chippendale charged down the wing riding several tackles before releasing Reece Fennel with an excellent pass. Reece shot but it was well defended for a corner. Will Boyle took the corner and, using the wind to his advantage, his curling cross found the net with a little help from a Barnsley head. 1-0

Ben Joyce was next to come close with a neat turn and snap shot which was well saved by the keeper. Minutes later, Ben turned provider when his cross found Will Boyle in the box. Will turned and shot in one move, again the keeper made an excellent save diverting the ball on to the cross bar and back into play. Reece was first to react and tap the ball goal bound. The keeper managed to smoother the shot but it was judged to have crossed the line and the reaction of both sides confirmed this. 2-0

Barnsley responded with an attack down the left, their centre forward charging into the Leeds box and firing a low hard shot into the far corner. 2-1

They came close to equalising with five minutes to go when again their centre forward was released leaving him one on one with Dan Clayton. Dan stood his ground and pulled of a superb save diving to his right to send the forward's shot for a corner.

Final score 2-1 a good all round team performance with exceptional displays from Sam Chippendale, Reece Fennel and Will Boyle.

 Sheffield 3  Leeds 2 - 12th April

On Saturday 12 April 2008 Leeds travelled to Sheffield for their first game in five weeks following the Easter break.

Perhaps, with hindsight, it was a little much to expect a continuation of the high standards they had set prior to the break and from the kick off, Leeds looked lack lustre and lethargic. In contrast Sheffield appeared to have given Easter a miss this year, and doubled up on their training.

Although the first twenty minutes of play took place mainly in the Sheffield half, there were few attempts on goal. Will Boyle and Ben Scargill battled hard to create opportunities for the front men and both Reece Fennel and Macaulay Millburn had shots saved by the keeper. On the right wing Jamie Lloyd was set free by an excellent through ball from Ben but Jamie’s pace was matched by the bravery of the Keeper who smothered the ball before he could shot.

When Sheffield got into their stride they looked dangerous going forward. The Leeds defence all made strong challenges to smoother attacks but they could do little to prevent the first goal. A Leeds goal kick was headed back into the path of the Sheffield centre forward who slotted home giving keeper Danny Clayton no chance. The next Sheffield goal came from a good move down the right which drew the defence towards the ball resulting in a good cross finding an unmarked Sheffield player who was able to pick his spot, again giving Danny no chance. Half time 0-2

The second half continued in the same vein, Leeds looking disjointed and Sheffield forcing the game. Their third goal came from an excellent free kick on the edge of the Leeds box and a forth looked certain when Danny Clayton had to dribble the ball out of his own box following a back pass that slowed up in the mud.  With Danny way out of his goal the Sheffield winger shot well and was on the verge of celebrating before Josh Robson superbly scooped the ball from mid air and clear the danger.

Facing humiliation and a dressing down from Steve Wales, the Leeds players began to show signs of having previously met. The introduction of Spencer Lund added some grit and determination to the team and along with the equally determined Will Boyle, Leeds took control of the midfield and sparked the others into action. Reward came on fifty five minutes when Ben Scargill charged into the Sheffield box and forced the ball to Macaulay Millburn in the centre.  Macca turned well and picked out Joe Boylan with a neat pass, Joe skipped passed a defender and fired home an excellent shot. Leeds kept up the pressure and were further rewarded with three minutes to go. From a short corner, Will Boyle sent over an inviting cross, Josh Robson timed his jump perfectly and met the cross with a majestic header to make the final score 2-3. A deserved victory for Sheffield.

Although Leeds were clearly not at their best, there were snippets of good play and two particularly good performances from Josh Robson and Odun Obebe.

Saturday March 1st 2008   LEEDS U12s       3                     WAKEFIELD U12s         0

Following the wind spoiled game at St. Theresas against Nottingham the week before, the conditions were no better at Rodillian for the game against Wakefield. Yet again a near gale force wind was blowing straight down the pitch. For the first time in many weeks though the Leeds team had plenty of numbers with only Nathan Bennett missing from the full squad.

Leeds played the first half in to the wind and quickly got in to their stride. Ben Joyce creating the first chance but when his powerful shot hit the Wakefield keeper straight in the face he couldn't quite get the rebound. Wakefield were definitely a stronger opposition from the match earlier in the season and with the advantage of the wind they were more than capable of worrying the Leeds defence. Centre-back Josh Robson was in great form, ably supported by Odun Obebe, Sam Chippendale and Conor Gilboy who together formed a solid back line thwarting everything the opposition could launch at them. There was however one scare when a long range shot rebounded off the bar.

At the other end the Leeds team's fluent passing on the floor countered the difficult conditions. Will Boyle was up for the challenge and was both creator to release Jamie Lloyd as well as seeing a great shot saved and header over the bar. Luke Porritt crashed a shot in to the sidenetting and it was only a matter of time before Leeds opened their account.

When the goal came, Porritt was fouled as he attacked down the left wing and from the resultant Reece Fennell free kick, Will Boyle's flick found Ben Joyce who scored with a neat finish. There was still time for Wakefield and the wind to combine to cause difficulties. Dan Clayton in goal did well to parry a swirling shot before bravely following up with a reaction save to combine with Sam Chippendale to keep it out. Half-time 1-0.

Although Leeds had the wind in the second half, such was its strength that gauging the weight of passes was always going to be a challenge. It was however all Leeds and without the inspired performance from the Wakefield keeper it would have been an easier victory. As it was with the luxury of a full bench Mr Wales could shuffle his pack. Second half substitutes Joe Boylan and Ben Scargill both had chances but couldn't quite get the range right to hit the target. Corners were a good source of attacks with quality deliveries from Will Boyle causing trouble, Luke Porritt had a superb diving header well saved from one.

The second goal saw Kieron Turnbull break down the right and whip in an excellent cross/shot which ended up in the back of the net. Jamie Lloyd's challenge fooling the keeper. The chances continued for Leeds but they couldn't beat the keeper, Macaulay Milburn and Ben Joyce forcing good saves.

At two up Leeds were in control, Wakefield were not going to lie down and took advantage of changes in the Leeds defensive line up to create another chance only to see the shot hit the bar and bounce over. At the death Leeds sealed victory with an end to end passing move which saw Odun Obebe and Mitch Lund to send Jamie Lloyd through. Again the Wakefield keeper pulled of great save, but Macaulay Milburn was on hand to squeeze the ball home. Full-time 3-0.

Although the wind made things difficult it was another good performance from the Leeds side against a much improved Wakefield team. Another three points in the bag for the Junior Star League.

Saturday 23 February 08

Leeds schools u12  v  Nottingham  2-2

A blustery morning greeted the teams at St Theresa's for this friendly. Leeds had narrowly beaten Nottingham in a league match earlier in the season and a fiercely competed game was expected.

Playing against the wind, Leeds were first to threaten goal when Keiran Turnball received the ball near the Nottingham bye-line. From what looked like an impossible position, he managed to juggle the ball over the defender and send in an excellent cross to Ben Scargill whose cross/shot drifted just wide of goal.

Nottingham responded by making good use of the wind to set free their powerful left winger.  He won a free kick 30 yards out which flew just wide of Dan Clayton's goal. Within minutes the same player forced a corner and when the ball cleared the goal mouth and fell to the centre forward, Leeds were slow to close him down and a neat finish put Nottingham in front.

Twenty minutes in and Leeds were playing the better football, Connor Gilboy and Keiran Turnbull linking well to create opportunities for Reece Fennell, Ben Joyce and Ben Scargill. But Nottingham continued with the long ball game and it took grit and determination from centre backs Josh Robson and Sam Chippendale to hold the fort. Despite their efforts, Nottingham fortuitously went two up when a corner ball got caught in the swirling wind deceiving Dan and bending into the net. Halftime 0-2, not a bad score in view of the conditions.

With the wind now favouring Leeds it was not long before they were on the score sheet. Some neat passing between Luke Porritt and Will Boyle set Reece on a chase to goal. With a touch of genius, he managed to deftly lob the oncoming keeper and score a truly exquisite goal. The second goal soon followed.  From a superb ball by Macaulay Millburn, the lightening Jamie Lloyd tore down the left wing cutting back on the bye-line and delivering an inch perfect cross with his right foot. ËÅ“Thank you very much' said Ben Joyce as he calmly tapped in.

Despite all the pressure from Leeds a third goal never came and they had to settle for a draw. But this was a fine team performance. The conditions and Nottingham's powerful attackers really tested the defence. In goal, Dan and Nathan Bennett did exceptionally well to keep the score down, both showing great courage and safe hands. The midfielders battled to win possession and the forwards worked tirelessly to create opportunities.

Saturday February 16th 2008  LEEDS U12s   3             DERBY U12s     0

For the second time in three weeks, Derby provided the opposition. This time Leeds had the home advantage at a frosty Rodillian School, and it was Junior Star League match and not a 'friendly'. Derby proved difficulty opponents the last time the side met, and it was a depleted Leeds squad that met with 4 of the squad missing. (Conor Gilboy and Will Boyle unavailable, Joe Boylan injured and Spencer Lund ill).

The early morning sun gradually melted the frost and the pitch was just about playable for the delayed start. Leeds started well with Jamie Lloyd making the space to use his pace down the right to good effect but the Derby defence stood firm. At the other end the Leeds defence did not settle well and Derby had the pace and physical presence up front to look dangerous. Odun Obebe had to get back to block what looked a dangerous attack.

Given the absentees there were a few enforced position changes. Super striker Reece Fennell dropped back in to Midfield and turned provider, releasing quality through balls for his usual striking partners Ben Joyce and Macaulay Milburn. The Derby keeper was however in excellent form and brave with it to thwart both Joyce and Milburn. Not to be outdone Nathan Bennett in the Leeds goal dealt effectively with a number of Derby attacks.

The first half was fairly equal until Leeds just gained the upper hand. Sam Chippendale was unlucky not to score with a powerful header from a Jamie Lloyd corner and shortly afterwards Macaulay Milburn sent Ben Joyce through on a decisive run. As the Derby keeper came out Joyce managed to clip in round him and as he closed in to score was fouled and a penalty awarded. Joyce picked himself up to coolly slot home the spotkick.

Leeds started livelier in the second half and Macaulay Milburn saw a good free kick well saved by the Derby keeper. Not to be outdone Milburn opened his account shortly after. Ben Joyce turned provider and threaded a perfect through ball to Milburn who timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap before neatly finishing. The same duo combined again for the third goal with virtually an identical move.

Derby are a big physical team with an excellent goalkeeper and whilst it took Leeds a little while to break them down they were comfortable winners in the end. The reduced squad meant little flexibility and most players had to play the whole game on a difficult energy sapping pitch. Overall an excellent three points that maintains the unbeaten record in the League and gives the Leeds boys the perfect base from which to challenge for the title.

Saturday 9 February 2008   Leeds U12  4  Scarborough  2

A perfect winter morning met the Leeds team as they arrived for a friendly match in Scarborough.  A slow start found each side vying for possession mostly in the Scarborough half, but without any real penetration.

The dead-lock was broken on ten minutes when Luke Poritt made space down the left wing and played a good ball to Reece Fenell. Reece made a great run down the centre and unselfishly fed a simple pass for Ben Joyce to tap in. 1-0

Scarborough responded immediately with a splendid piece of neat passing football resulting in a well finished goal. 1-1

A further ten minutes passed with Leeds dominating possession and territory thanks largely to the efforts of midfield duo Spencer Lund and Ben Scargill. Ben's industry was rewarded on twenty minutes after good work down the left by Joe Boylan and Luke Poritt forced a corner. A superb delivery by Reece Fennel found Ben unmarked in the box, he dispatched an assured header to put Leeds in front at the break. 2-1

The second half started with an almost replica goal at the other end. Reece again finding Ben with a great corner and Ben nodding in with aplomb.  A well deserved second for him after a fine performance. 3-1.

Next to come close was Macaulay Millburn who's brilliant free kick from thirty yards skimmed the cross bar. Maca also played a part in the next goal when he received a fine pass from Sam Chippendale and let loose a low hard shot which was tapped in by Spencer Lund. 4-1

Until this point, the safe hands of Nathan Bennett and the Leeds back four; Mitch Lund, Odun Obebe, Josh Robson and Sam Chippendale had done a workmanlike job of snuffing out the home team's attacks. But with ten minutes to go, a mix up in defence led to a scrambled second goal for Scarborough. 4-2

Leeds did enough to breeze through the game without needing to find top gear, the final score of 4-2 slightly flattering Scarborough

Saturday January 26th 2008  DERBY U12s     1          LEEDS  U12s   2

A bright sunny morning awaited down in Derby with a strong gusty wind swirling up and down a fairly sodden pitch. After all the rain we'd had in Leeds it was a pleasant surprise that the game went ahead to give the Leeds team a run out after last week's postponement.

Leeds had the best of the early exchanges with Luke Porritt down the left making good use of his pace to pressure the Derby defence. Down the right Macaulay Milburn also found space as Leeds made the most of the wind at their back. The Derby team though had some determined players who were not in a mood to lie down without a fight.

The left wing attacks for Leeds were still looking the most dangerous. Conor Gilboy used all his tenacity to battle through the middle before sending Luke Porritt clear again to only see his shot saved. Porritt though made no mistake soon after when another determined run from Spencer Lund gave him the space to push forward and score with a great left foot finish.

Unfortunately the lead did not last long as some indecisive defending prevented the ball being cleared allowing the Derby striker to score. Half-time 1-1

Early in the second half Leeds took the lead. The Derby keeper had an excellent game and on this occasion saved well from both Ben Joyce and Kieron Turnbull, but could not prevent Reece Fennell forcing the ball home. Leeds were playing into the wind which was making clearances difficult. The Derby keeper could also kick long which was causing problems for the Leeds defence. The difficult bouncing ball was not getting dealt with and both twins, Mitch and Spencer Lund together with Sam Chippendale had to make blocks to clear danger.

At the other end Leeds were struggling to keep their shape as the strong wind condensed the game away from the right wing. Chances were few and far between, although Will Boyle managed to send Ben Joyce clear only to see his curling shot catch the wind and end up agonisingly just wide. Full-time 1-2

The conditions were difficult and it was not the best of games to watch. Derby though are a much improved side from last season and despite the conditions Leeds deserved the win. It wasn't the best of performances, but its got to be a good sign when you can play badly and still come away with a win.

Michael Dale Cup

LEEDS U12s     1          YORK U12s   0

Following the narrow defeat to York earlier in the season, this eagerly awaited cup match was always going to be a close and so it proved. It was a bright, sunny morning, but once the overnight frost had lifted the recent rain had left the pitch in a heavy condition and probably a little sticky for an open flowing game. Mr Wales had fallen victim to one of the bugs doing the rounds so it was left to Mr Joyce to take the reins.

It was a slow start as both sets of players struggled to keep possession as they got used to the pace and conditions of the pitch. York were a big physical side and were determined to start strongly winning more than their share of the 50:50 balls. Not to be outdone the Leeds centre midfield of Will Boyle and Spencer Lund were up for the battle and after the slower start got into their stride. Kieron Turnbull down the right created the space for some penetrating runs and although there were no clear cut chances Leeds looked the more likely to score. At the other end, the Leeds defence were in determined mood and the back four of Mitch Lund, Josh Robson, Odun Obebe and Joe Boylan kept the York attack under control such that Dan Clayton in goal didn't need to make a save in the first half.

Leeds started the stronger in the second half with substitute Luke Porritt quickly involved with some forceful runs and crosses from the left wing. The York keeper had to be in good form to deny both Reece Fennell, Will Boyle and Jamie Lloyd as Leeds started to gain advantage. York however were still in the game and Dan Clayton in the Leeds goal had to match his counterpart with an excellent catch from a long range free kick before getting down low to save another.

As the game entered its final period both sides pushed for the knockout goal. York were thwarted again by great tackles from Josh Robson and Mitch Lund and at the other end substitute striker Macaulay Milburn used his fresh legs to lead the line. With only minutes left on the clock it looked like extra time was likely, but Leeds managed to take the lead. Another forceful run with great determination down the left from Luke Porritt gave him the space for an excellent cross that the York keeper could only block allowing Ben Joyce to score from close range.

Time was running out and although York again tried to push forward they were again thwarted by the determined Leeds team. The final seconds saw a harshly given red card to a York player as Leeds held out for a deserved victory.

Overall, Leeds deserved the victory, York are a good team and it was a close well contested match on a difficult playing surface. With the League match still to come everyone can look forward to the best of three decider.

Saturday 5 January 2008

 Leeds u12 v Nottingham South u12

Nottingham were straight at Leeds and they could have opened the scoring on five minutes when their centre forward latched onto a loose ball with only the keeper to beat. Fortunately Nathan Bennett was quick off his line and bravely smothered the ball.  Leeds were next to attack when a clever lobbed pass from Ben Scargill found Kieran Turnbull on the right. Keiran fired a good shot in which the keeper saved well and released quickly setting up a counter attack. Their centre forward was again bearing down on goal but was denied a shot by a crunching tackle from Sam Chippendale.

The Nottingham pressure continued and was rewarded when they were gifted a free kick near the corner flag. The resulting cross caused chaos in the Leeds area the ball eventually falling to a red shirt and swiftly slotted into the net. 0-1

Clearly Leeds would need a little time to work off the Christmas excesses of chocolate, turkey, sprouts, chocolate and chocolate. It took captain, Josh Robson to rally the troops and from this point on Leeds were in charge. Josh went on to have fine game in the centre of defence as did Keiren Turnbull on the right and left wings (once he had softened the leather of his new boots from Santa).

Leeds equalised on fifteen minutes following good work down the left by Joe Boylan who found Will Boyle on the edge of the Nottingham area. Will fired in a low hard shot into the corner and the flood gates opened. 1-1. It was Connor Gilboy on the right that created the next goal , he found Macaulay Milburn with a fine long ball, Macca showed great skill and deftly fed Will Boyle who dispatched a superb volley giving the keeper no chance and scoring the goal of the game. 2-1

Minutes later Leeds came close again with a scorching Ben Joyce free kick which Ben Scargill nearly guided into the net. The two boys combined again to score the next goal following a surging run and shot from Ben S which Ben J tapped in. 3-1 half time.

Josh Robson created the next goal with a clearance that fell to Reece Fennell, his slide rule pass set up Ben Joyce who expertly slotted the ball past the keeper. 4-1. Spencer Lund was next to put his stamp on the game when he powered down the right, rounded the keeper and drove a shot towards goal where Reece was on hand to tap in. 5-1. Nottingham then came close when a long ball cleared the Leeds defence but was well read by Mitchell Lund and his last ditch tackle prevented a clear goal scoring opportunity. Unfortunately Nottingham scored from the resulting corner when the ball was drilled across the goal line and rebounded off Connor into the net. 5-2.

More pressure from Leeds followed with a neat ball from Ben Scargill to Connor who scampered down the right wing and released Macca, his shot just going wide of the post.

The final goal came from Jamie Lloyd who had struggled to shake off stomach ache throughout the game but was still able to use his lightening pace to latch on to a Joe Boylan pass and then dispatch an assured finish. 6-1 final score.

Saturday December 1st 2007  LEEDS U12s     5          GATESHEAD FELLING U12S     3

Despite the recent heavy rain it was a bright and breezy morning at Rodillian and another delayed start as the opposition arrived late when their bus got lost! Leeds got in to their stride straight away and took the lead very early on when Will Boyle and Macaulay Milburn linked well to send Conor Gilboy down the right to score at the far post.

Despite the early Leeds dominance, Felling did manage to break and Dan Clayton had to be at his best with a great reaction save. Leeds however had the better of the first half and the fluent passing in the midfield created a number of chances; Ben Joyce hit the post and Will Boyle, Luke Porritt and Conor Gilboy all shot just wide. The second goal did come just before half time, Ben Joyce's run down the left created the space to find Conor Gilboy who set up Will Boyle for a neat finish. Half time 2-0.

Leeds came out of the blocks quickly in the second half and increased their lead when a Ben Joyce long range shot curled in to the top corner. Will Boyle added a fourth following another good move down the left. Despite being four down, Felling showed great spirit and created a series of chances. Two were frantically cleared and Dan Clayton again was in top form with a short range block and an excellent touch round the post. Football's a funny old game as despite all the pressure from Felling, Leeds increased their lead when a Ben Joyce flick created the space for Reece Fennell to show his pace and score.

The 5-0 scoreline was a little harsh on Felling and did not reflect the quality of their football. The Leeds defence had to remain alert and the centre back pairing of Sam Chippendale and Josh Robson had plenty to do but remained solid. The first goal for Felling was a little fortunate as a corner came straight out of the low winter sun and direct in to the goal. They then added a second when a route one long through ball reached the Felling centre-forward who scored with a neat finish.

Although time was running out Leeds still had further chances and Reece Fennell and Macaulay Milburn had shots well saved by the Felling keeper. At the other end Felling scored at the death with a harshly awarded penalty for handball. Full time 5-3.

The last game of 2007 was highly entertaining with both teams showing their quality with some excellent football. Leeds took their chances well and deserved the victory but Felling were a good test and without the crucial saves from Dan Clayton we could have seen a closer end result.

Saturday 24 November 2007  South Tyneside 1  Leeds 8

It was clear from kick off that the home team were no match for Leeds and in hindsight they are probably grateful the game was shortened to just 25 minutes each way.

McCaulay Milburn opened the scoring when he latched onto a fine cross from Kieran Turnbull, his initial shot was parried by the keeper but Macca slotted home with his second attempt. Minutes later Will Boyle came close when his fierce shot skipped just wide of the post.

The second goal was a gift to Reece Fennell from the home keeper whose goal kick fell at his feet. Reece showed no mercy and with neat control, calmly side footed the ball into the net. The pressure kept coming and Joe Boylan was next to come close when his long shot was headed off the line.

The third goal came on 15 minutes and was created by Spencer Lund, his superb cross found Reece in the box and again with neat control he laid the ball off to Will Boyle who saw the keeper off his line and lobbed him with style. Spencer was next to come close when he hit the bar with a powerful header from a Luke Porritt cross. Half time 0-3.

The second half saw the introduction of Ben Joyce who immediately got into the swing when he shot just wide after beating three defenders. Reece grabbed a deserved second on 35 minutes when Will boyle fed him a defence splitting ball and from the edge of the box he lobbed the oncoming keeper. Soon after, Macca grabbed his second when he was first to react to a loose ball in the Tyneside area and fired home from short range.

The next goal came from Tyneside on the counter attack, their midfielder quick to release the centre forward from the half way line beating the Leeds off side trap and leaving a straight run on goal giving Nathan Bennett no chance. A minor blip, and the home keeper was soon picking the ball out of his net again. Will Boyle was provider again, this time sending a telling ball to Ben Joyce who rounded the keeper with aplomb and slotted home.

With five minutes to go it was the turn of Connor Gilboy and Jamie Lloyd to get into the action. Connor won the ball deep in his own half carried it round their left winger and fed Jamie whose lightening pace took him to the bye line where he crossed to Macaulay Milburn. Maaca finished the move and claimed his hat-trick by firing in from close range on the half volley. The final goal was similar in build up with Connor and Jamie linking well but this time an unfortunate Tyneside defender got on the end of Jamie's cross and found the back of his own net.

Final score 1-8, a great attacking performance and a restful morning for the defence.

Saturday November 17th 2007     NOTTINGHAM  U12s    2      LEEDS U12s      3

Following the victory in the Cup last week against South Notts, the Leeds team returned to Junior Star League action away at Nottingham. An accident on the M1 delayed the coach but a bright morning awaited at the excellent University Boulevard facilities.

It was a slow start for the Leeds boys who found it difficult to settle after the long journey. Nottingham had some tall players and their physical presence created the best of the early exchanges, a free kick over the bar and a shot hitting the post. Leeds however took the lead against the run of play when Jamie Lloyd won possession deep in his own half and linked well with Will Boyle who carried the ball forward in a forceful run before releasing Reece Fennell who saw his first shot saved but tucked in the rebound.

Nottingham bounced right back and a defensive mistake returned possession to their centre forward whose neat turn allowed him the space to score with a neat finish. The half progressed with few direct chances and the half finished level. Half time 1-1.

Leeds took the lead early in the second half when the Will Boyle / Reece Fennell combination produced a somewhat opportune and fortunate goal. Boyle's drive was met by Fennell's head and changed the direction enough to wrong foot the keeper and the ball sailed in to the open goal.

Although Leeds had the advantage, Nottingham were still looking dangerous and had chances particularly from some generous free kicks within shooting distance. At the other end Leeds were in full flow and the pace of Ben Joyce and Kieron Turnbull together with the tenacity of Reece Fennell were thorns to the Nottingham defence.

Against the run of the play another defensive mistake gifted possession to Nottingham and when the attempted clearance was indecisive their centre-forward got enough on his shot to score his second. It was time to dig deep and to their credit the Leeds boys had enough left to bounce back. The winning goal started with a Nottingham goal kick that reached Ben Scargill and his accurate pass found Reece Fennell who hit target for his second hat-trick in successive matches.

The game ended with Leeds in the ascendency. Further chances were created with Conor Gilboy unlucky to see a long range shot just too wide, and Jamie Lloyd harshly judged offside after a great move down the left. Full time 2-3.

Overall, a good performance against a physical Nottingham side. The victory leaves the Leeds team unbeaten in the League and could turn out to be a crucial three points in the final analysis.

Sat 10 Nov 07

Leeds u12  v South Nottingham u12

6-0

The first cup game of the season saw Leeds drawn against South Nottingham on a cool overcast morning. Leeds started well and were soon in front. A Nottingham free kick was sent long into the Leeds half but was immediately returned with a strong header by Spencer Lund, the ball fell to Macaulay Millburn who spotted Reece Fennell darting down the right and played a perfectly weighted ball into his path. With the keeper approaching, Reece calmly lobbed the ball over him and into the net.

The next goal came on ten minutes. From a throw on the right, Connor Gilboy made a perfect connection on the half volley and sent a cross/shot into the far corner of the goal leaving the keeper stranded.

The third goal was created by Luke Porritt who made a trademark run into the box (jinking and super, Nigel) leaving three defenders in his wake, his low hard shot was well saved by the keeper but too hot to handle and Reece Fennell was quick to pounce  force in for his second.

Nottingham did not have much to respond with, the Leeds defence looking as solid as ever and Dan Clayton in goal had little to deal with other than one speculative shot which he held on to without a fuss.

More pressure followed from Leeds and on the twenty-fifth minute a forth goal came after a sequence of neat passes ended with Reece feeding the ball to Macaulay who expertly tucked the ball away with his left foot. Half time 4-0

Leeds were now playing against the wind which suited Nottingham's long ball game and although our defence were kept busier the momentum stayed with Leeds and another goal was inevitable. Will Boyle made a powerful run from his own half into the Nottingham box and deserved a goal but he shot just wide. Jamie Lloyd used his lightning pace down the right wing and crossed to Luke Porritt whose shot was well saved, the rebound falling to Ben Joyce bought out an even better save.

The fifth goal eventually came from good work down the left, an inch perfect pass from Joe Boylan found Reece in the centre he outpaced two defenders and beat the keeper with an assured finish.

The move for the sixth goal started near the Leeds area with Sam Chippendale making a tremendous tackle and retaining possession, he fed Will who picked out Luke on the left, his low cross found Macaulay who scored his second with a neat finish.

Dan Clayton kept a clean sheet by making a superb point blank save from a goal mouth scramble followed by a 'Smicheal like' one on one with the Nottingham centre forward.   The whole team 'done good' but special mentions go to Sam Chippendale for his towering performance in defence and to Macualay Milburn who was outstanding in attack.

Friday 26th October

WOLVERHAMPTON   U12s   1       LEEDS    U12s     6

After the early start and the morning trip to Conkers the Leeds team arrived at the Wolverhampton Casuals ground for the first match of the tour.

The match started slowly which was probably a consequence of the delayed start on a cold afternoon and both teams took a little time to find their feet on a decent playing surface. It was Wolves who took the lead after the Leeds defence failed to clear when they should have and one of the lively strikers took his chance well when it fell to him.

Wolves were looking the better team and the Leeds defence had to be alert again to counter another attack with Odun Obebe using his pace to tackle and allow Sam Chippendale to clear.

As the half progressed the quality of the passing improved and the Leeds team started to find some fluency. Chances fell to Conor Gilboy, Jamie Lloyd, Ben Joyce and Macaulay Milburn but the Wolves keeper was in great form to deny all four. The equaliser looked inevitable and came when the impressive Ben Scargill picked out Ben Joyce to score with a neat finish. Leeds finished the half stronger and Scargill brought the best out of the Wolves keeper with a long range shot before seeing another longer effort rebound from the cross bar.

Half-time 1-1.

It was one way traffic in the second half as Leeds went from strength to strength and pressurised Wolves from start to finish. The first goal started with a forceful Luke Porritt run down the left which earned a corner. Porritt took it himself and his near post cross was smashed in on the volley by Ben Joyce for his second of the day.

The third goal came when Josh Robson won possession at the back and picked out Luke Porritt who in turn found Macaulay Milburn who scored with a neat finish. An end to end move that ripped apart Wolves. Influential captain Spencer Lund created the fourth when battled to win possession in the middle before picking out Ben Scargill to score a richly deserved goal in the top corner.

It was all Leeds but the Wolves keeper continued his one man battle to thwart both Luke Porritt's shot and Mitchell Lund's header. The fifth goal did come when the midfield duo of Spencer Lund and Ben Scargill linked well to release Conor Gilboy to pick his spot. Scargill then completed the victory with his second and Leeds' sixth with another great strike.

Full-time 1-6.

Overall despite a slow start it was an excellent performance. If it wasn't for the inspirational performance from the Wolves keeper the score would have easily reached double figures. The flexibility and quality within the squad meant that the absence of Reece Fennell (Holiday) and Will Boyle (Conkers!) didn't impact. A great game to watch and one that the large travelling crowd appreciated ahead of the evening's festivities!!

Leeds u12  v  Sutton Coalfield u12

The first ten minutes of the game were scrappy, each team taking time to settle but it was Leeds that found their rhythm first. Will Boyle won possession in the centre and after a series of passes across the field the ball found is it's way to Kieran Turnbull on the right wing. He sent in a dangerous looking cross/shot which bypassed the defence, attack and keeper to find the far corner of the net. 1-0 Leeds.

Sutton coalfield responded with two penetrating attacks which were adequately dealt with by Sam Chippendale and Mitch Lund. The next attack came from Leeds and produced arguably the best goal of the season so far. From a long throw on the left Macaulay Milburn turned inside his marker drifted in field and with great vision sent over a perfectly weighted ball to the oncoming Kieran Turnbull who finished the move with a superbly executed half volley. 2-0 Leeds.

Leeds came close to a third goal five minutes later when after a scramble in midfield Spencer Lund emerged with ball and released Ben Joyce who drove into the Sutton box but was tackled before he could pull the trigger. The ball fell to who fired in a great shot which the keeper brilliantly tipped over the bar. The keeper made another fine save from the resulting corner when he held on to a well placed shot from Joe Boylan.

From this point the pressure was on Leeds but the back four stood firm under the leadership of the ever reliable Josh Robson until Sutton were gifted a free kick on the edge of the Leeds box. The ball was floated over to the far post and their unmarked centre forward scored with a fine header. 2-1 halftime.

Leeds played uphill the second half but their performance went downhill. In contrast Sutton Coalfield improved, repeatedly creating havoc in the Leeds half and, despite some brave goalkeeping from Nathan Bennett, they soon equalised with a neat finish from a well worked move.

Leeds were beginning to look jaded and made only two more meaningful attacks. Ben Joyce outpaced the Sutton defence but was denied by the keeper and Ben Scargill  came close with a long range effort, but there was little else to cheer. The Leeds defence looked uncharacteristically disorganised and with five minutes to go Sutton grabbed a winner from a goalmouth scramble. 3-2 Sutton Coalfield.

A final mention goes to the committed work of the touchline support. Particularly Bryn Milburn who took his role of ballboy literally by bravely choosing to block a wayward clearance with his testicles.

Saturday 20th October - Leeds 5 Bradford 0

Perfect weather conditions and a beautifully manicured pitch provided the setting for the under 12's first competitive match of the season, a home game against Bradford.

Leeds immediately set the tone by controlling all areas of the pitch and keeping Bradford on the back foot for virtually the whole of the first half. The pairing of left back Joe Boylan and left wing Luke Porrit proved particularly effective and it was their good work which created the first goal. After a neat interchange of passes, Luke found Ben Joyce in the centre of the Bradford half, his superb ball released Kieran Turnbull whose persistence against defenders and goal keeper resulted in a loose ball which he swiftly slotted into the corner of the net.

The Leeds pressure continued with Will Boyle and Spencer Lund doggedly commanding midfield. It was Will's incisive pass to Ben Joyce that led to the second goal. Ben ran at the defence beating two players before firing in a fierce shot which the goalie could only parry and the tenacious Reece Fennell was on hand to tap in.

After fifteen minutes Bradford made their first meaningful attack when their quick centre forward was released with only Odun Obebe and the Leeds keeper to beat. Rising to the challenge, Odun made the tackle of the match and Bradford hardly troubled the Leeds defence again. The Leeds back four looked solid throughout the game, right back Mitchell Lund gave a gritty performance and centre back Josh Robson was particularly impressive in maintaining aerial supremacy over the tall Bradford attack.  Although goalkeeper Danny Clayton had little to do, each time Bradford sent over a speculative long ball,  he stayed alert and was quick off his line to regain possession.

Further chances soon fell to Leeds, notably Ben Scargill just missed with a quick thinking snap shot and two well taken corners from Reece Fennell drifted across goal without a touch from either side. A third goal did come after twenty minutes. Joe Boylan won possesion on the halfway line and fed the ball to Luke Porritt who scampered into the box skipping two tackles before firing in a hard shot which the goalie did well to keep out but he could not hold it and after a scramble the ball fell to Reece who smashed home his second goal. Half time 3-0.

Bradford started the second half sprightly and were first to attack with a long ball finding their centre forward, his header cleared the keeper and was goal bound until Sam Chippendale made a brilliant clearance from the line. Sam went on to make several outstanding tackles throughout the second half. Leeds were soon back on top and the fourth goal came from some battling work on the right by Connor Gilboy. He found Macaulay Milburn who sent in a superb cross to the far post where Spencer Lund was waiting to tap in. The fifth came soon after when Ben Scargill picked out Luke who tore down the left wing and drilled in a low cross which was deflected into the net by a  Bradford defender.

From this point on Leeds eased up the pressure, the contest had been won and there were few incidents of note with the exception of a rare right footed shot from Joe, which just missed the corner flag!   There was however one final moment of drama. In the dying seconds Bradford got a free kick deep in the Leeds half and sent over an excellent cross. With several players in the box they looked certain to score but were thwarted by second half keeper, Nathan Bennett, who made two brilliant point blank saves to keep a clean sheet for Leeds. Final score 5-0 a comprehensive all-round team performance.

Saturday October 13th  LEEDS U12s    6            BARNSLEY U12s           2

After last week's disappointing defeat to York, the Leeds team were once again at home, this time to Barnsley. A tough game was expected as both games last season ended in draws.

Leeds started the brighter with Will Boyle picking out Reece Fennell whose commitment saw him nick the ball past the Barnsley keeper but it just didn't have enough pace and it was cleared off the line. It was a sign of things to come though as Fennell became a constant thorn to the Barnsley defence and had a couple of other chances in quick succession.

The Leeds defence and midfield seemed a little subdued and there was uncertainty in the early stages at times which did allow Barnsley the opportunity to push forward and they took the lead with a long range shot which gave Nathan Bennett in the Leeds goal no chance. The Barnsley lead was however short lived as Kieran Turnbull found Reece Fennell whose first touch found him the space to score with a neat chip.

Leeds started to dominate and took the lead when Fennell blocked a clearance before attacking down the left and producing a great cross for Macaulay Milburn to score after a neat turn. It was all Leeds and even when Barnsley threatened to attack Josh Robson at centre-half won possession and fed Kieran Turnbull down the right who linked with Reece Fennell to supply Macaulay Milburn to score. A great goal, turning defence in to attack in a excellent passing move. Fennell scored his second and Leeds fourth just before half-time. Half-time Leeds 4 Barnsley 1.

The second half saw some changes in the line up but Leeds were just as dominant. Ben Scargill went close with a long range shot and Macauley Milburn created space for himself but shot just wide. The Leeds midfield were in control with Will Boyle having a excellent game in the middle and the quality passing created continual problems for the Barnsley team. The fifth Leeds goal followed when a Jamie Lloyd corner was met with a powerful header from Ben Joyce.

Although Leeds were in control, Barnsley pulled a goal back with a neat counter attack before Ben Joyce completed the scoring with some neat footwork when he was picked out by a Conor Gilboy freekick. Full-time Leeds 6 Barnsley 2

Overall a convincing win and quality performance against what was on paper a difficult team. All three strikers bagged a brace and there were some battling performances in midfield with a solid platform at the back. It all looks good for the season ahead, starting with next week's first League match against Bradford.

Saturday October 7th   LEEDS U12s    1            YORK U12s       2

On a bright and sunny October morning the conditions were more suited to cricket than football. York were one of the few sides to avoid defeat against Leeds last season so a tough match was expected.

York started the stronger and were passing the ball around very well. The Leeds team did not settle and were under pressure from the off. York however did not create too many clear chances although Dan Clayton in goal had to be alert and pull off a good catch. Against the run of play Leeds did however take the lead. Jamie Lloyd used his pace down the right to pick out Ben Joyce who scored with a neat finish.

Following the goal, the game burst in to life and both teams competed equally. Both defences managed to contain although with a degree of uncertainty as possession was surrendered a little too easily. For Leeds, Jamie Lloyd continued to cause the York defence problems with his pace and he together with Ben Joyce and Reece Fennell all had reasonable chances to increase the Leeds lead. Half-time Leeds 1 York 0
