Match reports and results

Saturday 3rd March Stoke v Leeds

Leeds travelled across the pennines and had all four seasons in one during the two hour journey. The pitch they were due to play on was ankle deep in water so a second pitch was found which was only slightly better. Leeds welcomed back Ollie Roberts and Will Lenehan and Stoke kicked off in brightU13
but cloudy conditions. Leeds were first on the attack as Stephen Blower found Glen Hewitt, back to Stephen Blower before Glen Hewitt hit a shot that was saved by the Stoke goalkeeper. Stoke replied by attacking and the first shot they had hit the post and the next shot was well saved by James Crowther. Leeds were not defending as Stoke took the game to Leeds. A good responce from Leeds involved Will Lenehan who found Billy Law and as the ball came back to Will, the Stoke goalkeeper made a good save. Good defending by Jameel Ible and Freddie Swales kept Stoke at bay and Leeds should have scored from their next attack. Leeds forced a corner and a wonderful flighted cross from Stephen Blower found Luke Jones who headed wide. Good interpassing between Will Lenehan, Stephen Blower, Jameel Ible, Billy Law and Stephen Blower again came to nothing as the Stoke defence held firm.

The game was now being played in the muddy midfield as both sides found it difficult to make good passes and turn defence into attack. Leeds went up to the Stoke penalty area and good play by Stephen Blower and Will Lenehan forced a corner. The corner was scambled away by the Stoke defence and the
next attack produced the first goal for Leeds. A good break down the right hand side by Shaun Cundall who beat two defenders and his cross was slotted over the line by Glen Hewitt. A deserved lead for Leeds who were now starting to dominate the game against a Stoke side who were struggling to clear the ball out of their half. Good play between Freddie Swales, Glen Hewitt and Shaun Cundall came to nothing as Leeds went in search of goal number two. Leeds replaced Ollie Roberts with Harrison McPhee and forced
another corner, which once again came to nothing. Leeds should have scored again before the break as Jameel Ible found Harrison McPhee who found Glen Hewitt and the final ball to Billy Law saw him beat the defender and shoot wide. Half time Stoke 0 Leeds 1.goalie

The Leeds linesman was keeping the Leeds supporters amused as his array of hand signals was good and informative, if only he had raised his flag whilst signalling.

Leeds replaced James Crowther with Ashley Timms and also took off Freddie Swales, Glen Hewitt and Shaun Cundall who were replaced by Nathan Valentine, Daniel Coates and Thomas Vernay. Leeds kicked off the second half and were straight into the attack and forced a corner. Stoke cleared and the game once again became a midfield battle in the mud. Leeds took off Stephen Blower and replaced him with Ollie Roberts as Stoke won a free kick, only to see the ball go wide. A good Leeds attack down the right hand side involving Jake Alleston, Daniel Coates and Thomas Vernay was stopped by the Stoke
defence. Leeds took off Billy Law and replaced him with Freddie Swales who adopted the centre forward position. Stoke forced three corners on the trot as the ball was eventually cleared and Leeds mounted an attack which was turned into a Stoke attack and from the resulting corner Stoke equalised. The ball was not cleared by the Leeds defence and a scamble in the defence saw the ball go under Leeds keeper Ashley Timms and the ball pushed home over the line. Stoke 1 Leeds 1.

Stoke were now starting to get on top as the game went from end to end despite the muddy conditions. A good tackle by Jameel Ible stopped a promising Stoke move as Leeds forced another corner which was once again wasted.Leeds responded with a good spell of pressure and a free kick taken by Luke Jones was fired wide of the Stoke goal.

Stoke responded and won a corner. A short pass from the corner was not picked up by Leeds and the ball was passed into the goalmouth and slotted home to give Stoke a 2-1 lead. Could Leeds respond? Did they have the energy on the muddy and draining  surface? Leeds made two further changes as Freddie Swales and Jake Alleston were replaced by Shaun Cundall and Glen Hewitt. Leeds attacked and forced a throw in and then a corner. Will Lenehan supplied the perfect cross as Luke Jones headed home to make the score 2-2. Stoke attacked and won a free kick and good save from Ashley Timms stopped Stoke taking the lead. More pressure from Stoke and another corner made the last few minutes uneasy for Leeds, but they held out.u13

A fair result in the end on a glue pot of a pitch. Leeds were the better team at times and will look back on this game as one which they should have won. Final Score Stoke 2 Leeds 2.

Saturday 24th February Leeds v Hull

Hull were the visitors for todays game and they kicked off on a bright and sunny morning. Leeds began with Luke Jones playing in the midfield and Nathan Valentine started his first game up front with Billy Law. Leeds won the ball and went straight on the attack and a pass from Glen Hewitt found Daniel Coates who hit the ball over the advancing Hull keeper to give Leeds a great start. 1-0 with only a minute gone. Leeds attacked again and were not letting Hull settle at all. Hull responded with a good attack down the right hand side and a great tackle from Jameel Ible put the ball out of play. Good inter passing between Jake Alleston, Glen Hewitt, Freddie Swales and Glen Hewitt again saw a good move halted by the Hull defence.Glen Hewitt found Nathen Valentine who forced a throw in. Freddie Swales, Jameel Ible, Glen Hewitt and Luke Jones all assisted as the ball found Nathan Valentine who saw his go wide of the post. Hull were struggling to get the ball out of their half and Leeds were not helping themselves as all to often they tried to beat the extra man when a simple pass would have been a better option. The game was now being played in the middle of the field as both sides were lacking a player who could control play in the midfield.

Leeds were awarded two free kicks which were both defended by Hull. Once again the final pass was not good. Hull responded by going down field and Leeds keeper James Crowther was called into action for virtually the first time. A good pass out from James found Jake Alleston who then founf Luke Jones whose cross in was saved by the Hull keeper. Stephen Blower came off injured and was replaced by Thomas Vernay. Leeds did not capitalise on the
early goal against a team who were having trouble getting out of their own half. Half time Leeds 1 Hull 0

Leeds brought on Shaun Cundall for Glen Hewitt and Leeds mounted the first attack of the half. Luke Jones to Thomas Vernay to Shaun Cundall who found Daniel Coates  saw the ball go out for a corner. The corner was defended by Hull and the ball came out to Freddie Swales on the bye line. A good turn and and shot from a narrow angle saw the ball hit the bar and cleared by the Hull defence. Leeds now mounted another attack as a free kick 30 yards out by Harrison McPhee was turned round the post for a corner.A cross from
Jake Alleston found Luke Jones who saw his header flicked off the line by a Hull defender. It was now one way traffic and an offside decision saved Hull from going 2-0 down. Billy Law shot over the bar and further Leeds pressure saw them score their second goal. Attacking down the right hand side a pass from Nathen Valentine found Bill Law who beat one man and then firde the ball into the goal to give Leeds a 2-0 lead.

Hull mounted a rare attack but Leeds went back to the other end of the field and Harrison McPhee shot over the bar.Leeds took off Nathan Valentine and brought back on Glen Hewitt. Hull were now struggling as Leeds mounted attack after attack but the final ball or cross was poor or defended by Hull. Jameel Ible went off as Nathen Valentine returned. Leeds thought they
had scored number 3 when a shot from Billy Law was deflected by a defender, which sent the goal keeper the wrong way only for him to stick out an arm and send the ball out to safety.

A win for Leeds against a team who did not trouble them much. Leeds lacked a midfield general who could control the game and fan the ball out wide. Against a good team Leeds would have struggled and they need to up their game and play as a team rather than individuals.

Final score Leeds 2 Hull 0.

Leeds made four substitutions at the start of the second half and started where they had finished applying all the pressure. Barnsley were slowly getting back into the game after five minutes and started to cause Leeds problems at the back. Barnsley scored the first goal of the second half when a good break ended with the left winger scoring form the angle to beat substitute goalkeeper James Crowther. Leeds were not as convincing now as Barnsley applied the pressure and the back four of Leeds were put under pressure especially with the ball over the top. Leeds responded by moving up a gear and good inter passing down the left-hand side from Glen Hewitt and Daniel Coates found Aston Webster who scored from the angle for his hat trick.
